New Alzheimer's Council To Review Draft National Plan

A federal group that is supposed to shape the U.S. attack on Alzheimer's disease and other causes of dementia will hold a public teleconference at 1 p.m. March 14.

The group, the Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care and Services, will review the views of three council subcommittees on the new draft National Plan.

The council developed the draft to implement the National Alzheimer's Project Act of 2011 (NAPA).

NAPA requires U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to work with the advisory council to come up with a plan for coordinating and accelerating Alzheimer's disease research and providing more support for patients and caregivers.

In one section of the plan draft, the drafters suggest that the government should do more to find out why people fail to plan for long-term (LTC) needs and promote awareness of the need for LTC planning.

Members of the public who want to comment on the draft can register for 3-minute slots, officials say.

Would-be commenters must sign up for a slot by March 9.

Commenters also can submit written comments.
