"From the broker/agent perspective, perhaps the insurance carriers need to develop a more fair and fundamental alternative in the area of commissions that would be an incentive to keep business on the books. As things now stand, the insurance carriers themselves need to reevaluate their operating expenses instead of truly looking at the broker/agent as a mere expense and attempting to minimize the cost of a valuable asset.

"The most difficult part of my job was to convince the company I worked for [that] it existed only because there were people out there who did the leg work to maintain their existence. People who worked long hours, trained and educated themselves at, usually, their own expense, people who chose a career to serve the public."

"Great lesson and article. When I first got into the brokerage industry, we cold called a lot! I later learned that I really didn't want a prospect to buy from me on the first or second call because that meant he'd buy from anyone who offered him yield and new issues. Much tougher to cultivate long-term relationships but so much worth it in the longer term."

"A more useful and interesting study would be to break down the UNINSURED population into those who are insurable and could afford insurance (perhaps with some sacrifices) vs. those who actually can't afford it or are uninsurable. Then perhaps look at what percentage of the latter groups are already covered by Medicaid or some other program (assuming uninsured means privately uninsured). Then we could work on focused solutions to the small percentage that is left instead of a massive government takeover."
