Robert E. Wagner has been named Illinois' third acting director of insurance since former director Michael McRaith left to become the lead the Federal Insurance Office.

McRaith left in June to become director of the FIO in June 2011 after being appointed to the position in March.

Wagner, the general counsel for the Illinois Department of Insurance, took over for Andrew Stolfi on Dec. 24, says a spokeswoman with the insurance department.

Wagner has been with the department for 11 years.

Stolfi had been serving as the chief of staff and special counsel for policy and legislative affairs under McRaith. His term expired Dec. 23. Acting insurance directors in Illinois can only serve for 60 days.

The spokeswoman says Gov. Pay Quinn is still working on finding a permanent replacement for McRaith. She does not know when an announcement will be made.

Stolfi replaced McRaith's first successor, Jack Messmore, who served as deputy director, assistant deputy director and examiner-in-charge over 25 years at the Department of Insurance.

Messmore later retired.
