Cathleen Carr, an elder law lawyer, has developed a Web-based, self-study certification program aimed at people who care for the elderly.

CertifiedCare.org offers information about topics such as the dietary needs of the elderly, guidelines for handling the financial and legal needs of the elderly, and coping with the stress associated with caregiving, Carr says.

Carr, an ordained minister and certified massage therapist as well as a lawyer, says she has based the certification program on guidelines developed by the American Medical Association, Chicago.

Carr's website also offers elder care law resources and a blog on trends affecting caregivers.

Carr notes that she herself has served as a caregiver for relatives and friends for many years.

Her certification program is an outgrowth of efforts to provide a Web-based information and networking service for caregivers.

The program can provide a basic caregiving certification, an advanced caregiving certification, and an Alzheimer's-dementia specialist certification.

Carr plans to put certificate holders in a Directory of Certified Care Providers.
