Hightower announced Monday that VWG Wealth Management, a breakaway RIA team from Morgan Stanley, joined Hightower over the weekend, making it the first firm in the Washington, D.C., and Virginia area to join the Chicago-based RIA firm led by Elliot Weissbluth (left).

Based in Vienna, Va., VWG was named to Barron's list of Top 1000 Financial Advisors in both 2010 and 2011. VWG is led by John Verfurth, Richard Weeks and Jeff Grinspoon, who will serve as managing directors and partners at HighTower.

"VWG Wealth Management has more than 45 years of experience and knowledge working closely with high net worth clients to help them meet their financial goals at every stage," said Mike Papedis, HighTower's managing director of business development, in a statement. "With extensive resources, an impeccable reputation and a dedication to providing objective financial advice, VWG Wealth Management is a natural fit for HighTower."

Virginia Business magazine named VWG's three partners to its Winner's Circle of Top Advisors in the state of Virginia for three consecutive years, from 2006 to 2008. Verfurth came to VWG with 16 years of experience at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Weeks has 17 years of experience, beginning his career with Legg Mason in 1994 before joining Morgan Stanley in 2001. Grinspoon spent three years at Legg Mason before also joining Morgan Stanley in 2001.

HighTower is a national, advisor-owned financial services company serving high net worth and institutional clients. Many of HighTower's advisors are breakaway wirehouse brokers with large and established practices. The company is headquartered in Chicago and maintains corporate centers in New York and San Francisco as well as other offices around the country.
