Members of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) have elected Adam Hamm, the North Dakota insurance commissioner, to be the group's new secretary-treasurer.

The NAIC, Kansas City, Mo., held a special meeting via conference call to elect Hamm to succeed Illinois Insurance Director Michael McRaith.

McRaith is leaving Illinois and the NAIC secretary-treasurer post to become the first director of the new Federal Insurance Office, an arm of the U.S. Treasury Department.

Hamm became North Dakota commissioner in October 2007.

He is chair of the NAIC Life Insurance and Annuities Committee and vice chair of the NAIC's Midwest Zone. He also is chair of the NAIC's Principles-Based Reserving Working Group.

Hamm has a bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University and a law degree from the University of North Dakota.
