The top 10 U.S. long term care insurers paid about $11 million in daily benefits in 2010, according to the American Association for Long Term Care Insurance (AALTCI).

That amount is 53% higher than the daily amount paid by the same carriers in 2007 according to AALTCI, Westlake Village, Calif.

"Benefits paid by just these leading insurers totaled nearly $4 billion for the year, an amount that will keep growing as more aging policyholders qualify for benefits from their coverage," AALTCI Executive Director Jesse Slome says in a statement.

The top 10 LTC insurers provide benefits for about 135,000 individuals in a typical month, Slome says.

In 2010, 31% of the new individual claims were for home care, 30.5% were for assisted living and 38.5% were for skilled nursing home care, AALTCI says.
