Seniors speak out on long-term care

It's expensive, but I have it and I'm glad that I do. My wife and I both have a policy. We decided to go for it because my wife had a cousin who had a long nursing home stay a few years back and it pretty well ruined them, the family. He needed all sorts of specialized care and was in there for years. It was terrible. Sometime after that, my wife and I asked our financial person to recommend someone, an agent, who got us the policy. We think it's worth the peace of mind.

You know, when it comes to stuff like that, I'm inclined to just roll the dice and see what happens. I guess I'm lucky because my family history is that the men usually live a long and healthy life and then one day–bam–they drop dead, so I have the attitude that the same thing is going to happen to me–hopefully not too soon!

I actually don't know too much about that kind of insurance. I have heard about it, but I really need to do some research to see if it's something I need to look into. I think my brother has something like that, but he's got a lot of chronic conditions he has to worry about, so I think that's why he got it. I am hoping that if I get really sick or need looking after that my son and daughter-in-law would step in. That's my plan, really.

Our financial advisor found us a policy that covers the basics. To keep the premiums down, we went for a pretty modest plan, which would probably mean that a nursing home stay would still cost us quite a bit of money. It's just so hard to know if you're wasting your money with something like that. My wife really wanted it because her mother got Alzheimer's and spent the last four years of her life in a home. And that was really expensive!
