The future is what we make it

A new year has begun, and while the past is at least secure, the future is what we choose to make of it. Therefore, it's the perfect time to take a fresh look at where we've been, where we are and where we're going. Having this discussion with your clients will ensure–as we move into 2011–they have the confidence to know where their finances are going to take them.

Encourage your clients to re-examine their financial plans. There is no question each and every one of us has been faced with economic challenges in recent years. However, while we can not rewrite the past, we can certainly acknowledge it has been a learning experience and will assist us in the financial planning decisions we guide our clients–and ourselves–to make in the future.

Assessing your situation
Take the time now to ask your clients the tough questions to assess their current state of finances. Doing so should motivate them to take stock of their financial well-being and work toward the future of their dreams.

Are you living within your means?
If not, are you open and willing to making the necessary changes?

Have you established and communicated your plans to guide your loved ones in the event the unexpected were to occur?

When determining with clients how they would like the future to look, be sure the financial plans they've created are still providing comfort, confidence and security. Their plans should also still be on track to fund their retirement as well as the legacy they'd like to leave behind. Reassessing financial plans is vital, as our lives are constantly evolving. Be sure your clients' documents speak to the future, not the past.

Re-evalutating the plans
The only way you can arrive where you want to be is if you have established where you are going. As trusted financial advisors, we must guide our clients along their ideal path by making the re-evaluation of financial plans a priority each year. Doing so will give your clients a sense of ownership and control over the future. In the hustle and bustle of life, remind your clients to slow down and make the necessary changes to their plans today.
