Judy Biggert to Lead Key House Panel

WASHINGTON BUREAU — Rep. Judy Biggert has been picked to be the new chairman of the House Financial Services Committee subcommittee that deals with insurance.

Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., the incoming chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, has named Biggert, R-Ill., chairman of a Subcommittee on Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity.

Biggert represents a suburban Chicago district and has been in Congress since 1999. She earned a bachelor's degree from Stanford University in 1959 and a law degree from Northwestern University in 1963. She has been president of the school board in Hinsdale, Ill.

During the session of Congress that is now ending, insurance oversight has been housed at a Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government Sponsored Enterprises.

Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-Pa., the chairman of that subcomittee, lost his seat in the Nov. 2 elections.

Bachus also has named Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, to be the vice chairman of the full Financial Services Committee.

In addition to Biggert, the list of subcommittee leaders includes:

  • Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.: Financial Institutions Subcommittee and Consumer Credit Subcommittee.
  • Rep. Scott Garrett, R-N.J.: Capital Markets and Government-Sponsored Enterprises Subcommittee.
  • Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas: Domestic Monetary Policy Subcommittee.
  • Rep. Gary Miller, R-Calif.: International Monetary Policy Subcommittee.
  • Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Texas: Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.
