ACLI: Dirk Kempthorne to Succeed Keating

Dirk Kempthorne — a former mayor, senator, governor and U.S. Interior secretary — is now president of the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI).

The ACLI, Washington, has implemented previously announced plans to have Kempthorne Dirk Kempthornesucceed Frank Keating.

"One of my priorities in my new role will be to highlight how life insurers help Americans address very real concerns about their financial futures," Kempthorne says in a statement. "I also will spread the word on the how life insurers' long-term investments promote economic growth in communities nationwide."

Keating, a Republican, was governor of Oklahoma from 1995 to 2003. He has been president of the ACLI since 2003.

Kempthorne, also a Republican, was mayor of Boise, Idaho, from 1986 to 1993, and a U.S. senator from Idaho from 1993 to 1999. He was governor of his state from 1998 until May 2006, when President George W. Bush appointed him head of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
