The American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) has named Dirk Kempthorne to take over as its top executive Nov. 3.
Kempthorne will succeed Frank Keating as president and chief executive officer of the ACLI.
Keating, a Republican, was governor of Oklahoma from 1995 to 2003.
Kempthorne, also a Republican, was mayor of Boise, Idaho, from 1986 to 1993, and he represented Idaho in the U.S. Senate from 1993 to 1999.
Kempthorne then served as governor of Idaho from 1998 until May 2006, when President George W. Bush appointed him Interior secretary.
In 2006, Kempthorne became the first governor to sign legislation enabling his state to form a Deficit Reducation Act of 2005 long term care partnership program.
More than 300 life insurers and fraternal benefit societies belong to the ACLI. They account for about 90% of the U.S. life and annuity industries' assets and premiums.
