As week two of Life Insurance Awareness Month hits full stride, LIAM-related research and initiatives from industry organizations keep rolling in, and the figures continue to back up the viewpoint that too many Americans are uninsured, underinsured or just plain clueless about the level of life insurance protection they really need.
According to the Principal Financial Well-Being Index, new research shows the majority of American workers (82%) have life insurance coverage on themselves, but over a third (38%) of those individuals are not confident they have an adequate amount of coverage. Almost half of those surveyed this past spring by Harris Interactive feel they need two (18%) or five (29%) times their salary, which is well below the seven to 10 times actually needed.
"As Americans continue to rebuild from the financial crisis, life insurance is one of the most basic tools for personal financial security," said Greg Linde, vice president individual life for the Principal Financial Group. Linde stresses the importance of advisors working with their clients to put together a comprehensive financial strategy that ensures that their family's goals and financial dreams are achieved.
Throughout September and LIAM, The Principal is assisting advisors as they ask consumers to set aside time to learn more about their employer-sponsored life insurance coverage and to consider individual coverage options.
