As week two of Life Insurance Awareness Month hits full stride, LIAM-related research and initiatives from industry organizations keep rolling in, and the figures continue to back up the viewpoint that too many Americans are uninsured, underinsured or just plain clueless about the level of life insurance protection they really need.

According to the Principal Financial Well-Being Index, new research shows the majority of American workers (82%) have life insurance coverage on themselves, but over a third (38%) of those individuals are not confident they have an adequate amount of coverage. Almost half of those surveyed this past spring by Harris Interactive feel they need two (18%) or five (29%) times their salary, which is well below the seven to 10 times actually needed.

"As Americans continue to rebuild from the financial crisis, life insurance is one of the most basic tools for personal financial security," said Greg Linde, vice president individual life for the Principal Financial Group. Linde stresses the importance of advisors working with their clients to put together a comprehensive financial strategy that ensures that their family's goals and financial dreams are achieved.

Throughout September and LIAM, The Principal is assisting advisors as they ask consumers to set aside time to learn more about their employer-sponsored life insurance coverage and to consider individual coverage options. And, for the first time ever, The LIFE Foundation's realLIFEstories program will be simulcast live via the Web from NAIFA's annual convention in Seattle next week. There is no cost or preregistration required to watch, so carve an hour into your schedule next Monday at 1:20 p.m. EDT to hear stories that will inspire you to do get people in your community the coverage they need to protect their loved ones.

Log in at www.livestream.com/realLIFEstories and you will hear a trio or new realLIFEstories, as told by the clients who have experienced firsthand the difference that insurance can make when adversity strikes. You will also hear from a young woman whose father did not have any life insurance.

The live Webcast is a great free gift provided by the LIFE Foundation, and it would be a shame if producers don't check it out. I can promise you it will be an hour well-spent.
