Elder abuse is the physical, emotional, financial or sexual mistreatment or neglect of older adults. Here are some interesting facts:

There are 6 million cases of elder abuse each year

Almost 11 percent of all elder abuse cases occur in California, the most of any state

Women are 35 percent more likely to be abused than men

Thirty-three percent of alleged perpetrators are adult children

Twenty-two percent of alleged perpetrators were other family members

Eleven percent are spouses/partners

Sixteen percent of alleged perpetrators were strangers
