Personnel Changes: N.Y. Life, Transamerica, Hartford, Colonial, LMI, Aetna

New York Life Insurance Company says John Kim will be taking over from Gary Wendlandt as chief investment officer at the end of the year.

Wendlandt has been at New York Life, New York, since 1999, and one of his accomplishments was helping the company keep its triple-A ratings during the Great Recession, according to New York Life Chairman Ted Mathas.

Kim, 49, is president of New York Life Investments, and he will keep that title when he becomes CIO for the company as a whole, the company says.

Kim began working for New York Life in 2008 and previously was president of the Prudential Retirement unit at Prudential Financial Inc., Newark, N.J. (NYSE:PRU).

Kim has a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and a master's degree in business from the University of Connecticut.

In other personnel news:

- Transamerica Retirement Services, Los Angeles, a unit of AEGON N.V., The Hague, Netherlands (NYSE:AEG), has hired Charmaine Hughes to be vice president of business development.

Hughes will be based in Milwaukee.

Hughes previously was national director, emerging business retirement plan services, at a unit of Marshall & Ilsley Corp., Milwaukee.

Hughes holds the Chartered Retirement Plan Specialist and Accredited Investment Fiduciary professional designations.

- The Simsbury, Conn., life business of Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., Hartford (NYSE:HIG), has named Scott Sanderson to be vice president, government market and client management, in the retirement plans group.

Sanderson previously was vice president and national sales manager in the investment products division.

Sanderson has a bachelor's degree from Missouri Southern University.

- Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company, Columbia, S.C., a unit of Unum Group Corp., Chattanooga, Tenn. (NYSE:UNM), has added broker marketing managers to expand support for voluntary benefits producers.

The new broker marketing managers are Chris Holman, West Region; Belinda Maffei, Southwest Region; Charles Irick, Northeast Region; Kimsey Shanks, Southeast Region; and Mark Kuban, Midwest Region.

- LMI Research Institute, McLean, Va., a nonprofit government consulting organization, has hired John Bertko to lead a new Center for Health Reform.

The health reform unit will help state and government officials respond to the requirements of the Affordable Care Act, the legislative package that includes the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Bertko has been a vice president and chief actuary at Humana Inc., Louisville, Ky. (NYSE:HUM). He has been a member of many actuarial committees, and he served a 6-year term on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. He also has been on the panel of advisors of the Congressional Budget Office.

- Aetna Inc., Hartford (NYSE:AET), has named Dr. Wayne Rawlins, a medical doctor, to lead efforts to address racial and ethnic disparities in health care.

Rawlins, who has been a national medical director at Aetna, is a member of the Cultural Competency Expert Panel at the National Quality Forum, Washington.

Rawlins has a medical degree from the University of Connecticut and a master's degree in business from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

- Aon Consulting, an arm of Aon Corp., Chicago (NYSE:AON), has hired Shelly Blackstone to be vice president of business development for central and southern Virginia, and it has promoted Paul Mack to health and benefits practice leader in the Richmond, Va., office.

Aon Consulting also has hired Patricia Smallsreed to be a senior vice president and Chicago market leader. Smallsreed previously was a market leader in the Detroit office of Towers Watson & Company, New York (NYSE:TW).
