Extremely helpful or extremely scary, depending on one's point of view. Lord Browne of Madingley has accepted a leading role with the British Government as part of a major bureaucratic efficiency drive.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the former chief executive of BP has been asked to lead a team of top business people who will sit on the boards of every department.

Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude said Browne had agreed to become the Governments lead non-executive director. He will now be in charge of appointing other non-executive directors to the boards of every department, according to the paper.

Browne, who is not being paid for his new role, said he will work closely with Maude on overhauling how boards are run and improving governance across Whitehall.

"Its great news for the Government and taxpayer that Lord Browne has accepted this powerful role," Maude said in a statement. "His experience will be a real benefit in our drive to make Whitehall work in a more businesslike manner."

Browne described the appointment as a role within Government but also independent of it.

The announcement comes amid increased tensions with the United States over the explosion of the Deep Horizon oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico and BP's handing of the aftermath.
