Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company is trying to learn more about how U.S. families and their finances really work.
MassMutual, Springfield, Mass., will be commissioning a State of the American Family research study program.
The authors of the studies will look at "the different forms families take, how family members interact on matters financial and otherwise, how factors like ethnicity and income affect family dynamics, and trends that will shape families in the coming decade," MassMutual says.
The first study coming out of the program focuses on women and finance. About 25% of the women who participated in a survey conducted for the study said they wish they were more in control of their finances, and only 37% said they feel they can make financial decisions with just a little guidance, MassMutual says.
