See you at MDRT

There are a few things I'm looking forward to at this year's MDRT event in Vancouver, which I'll be heading out for on Sunday.

For one, I've never been to Vancouver, and from all I've seen – especially during coverage of the recent Winter Olympics – it's a beautiful place to visit. Hoping for a nice fresh seafood dinner at some point – we don't get much of that in Denver.

But more importantly, there are a number of don't-miss sessions with compelling and cutting-edge content, in both the main platform and the focus sessions.

I'll be there learn about John Foley's effective model for closing the performance gap. Foley is a former lead solo pilot of the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels flight demonstration squadron – I imagine he'll have some stunning video to show during his main platform speech. I also plan to be in the audience for Tom Hegna, CLU, ChFC, vice president of New York Life, when he talks about dynamic solutions on how to provide baby boomer clients with a guaranteed paycheck for life.

A couple of the focus sessions I'm looking forward to in particular include David William Brown, CLU, ChFC speaking on Monday about how to package the critical illness sale (unfortunately, it's at the same time as a presentation from the "Whole Person" track titled, "Your Love Life: Sizzle or Fizzle," but what can you do). Another one I plan to catch is Richard L. Olewnik, J.D., CLU's presentation on how to avoid the pending tax disaster facing "Employer-Owned Life Insurance."

Unfortunately I will be leaving town before one of my favorite aspects of MDRT takes place. I think one of the most valuable opportunities for attendees at MDRT is to take advantage of the "Practice Management Idea Exchange," the "Sales Idea Exchange" and the two "Open Forums" on retirement planning and protection product information and utilization. The member-to-member exchange of transferable strategies is an almost sure-fire way to come away with a great idea you hadn't thought of before, and something you could likely implement into your own practice in short order.

As an editor, the MDRT event provides plenty of great ideas for feature articles which may soon end up in the pages of Life Insurance Selling. It also provides me with a great opportunity to talk with top producers who may also have great feedback about the magazine and potentially offer story ideas.

And every now and then, you have crazy nights like the one in Indianapolis last year when Santhosh from Dubai is the life of the party before you end up walking back to the hotel in a downpour.

Our crowd will be on the lookout for you in Vancouver, Santhosh!
