The Nationwide Insurance Foundation is giving $1.54 million to the American Red Cross to help the nonprofit fund national disaster response efforts, blood mobiles, and chapter response and readiness activities.

About $700,000 of the gift will go to the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program, which helps the Red Cross get the supplies and systems in place to respond quickly when hurricanes, floods, tornados, wildfires and other disasters strike, according to the Red Cross, Washington.

About $320,000 of the gift will go to 17 local Red Cross chapters, and the rest will go to pay for new blood mobiles in Nashville, Tenn., and Charlotte, N.C., the Red Cross says.

The Nationwide foundation is backed by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Columbus, Ohio, the parent of Nationwide Financial Services Inc.
