A Mid-Atlantic insurer has updated its Medicare supplement insurance product menu to reflect changes in Medicare program rules.

Independence Blue Cross, Philadelphia, is replacing the old Security 65 Medigap plans with 5 new individual MedigapSecurity plans and 3 new group MedigapSecurity plans.

Holders of existing Security 65 plans can keep their existing plans with no changes in benefits, but Independence Blue will no longer sell the Security 65 plans, the company says.

The new individual plans — which offer the standardized A,B, C, F and N designs — and the new group plans, which offer the A, B and C designs – are similar to the old plans, but they offer the Medicare Part A hospice cost-sharing requirement required by the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008, Independence Blue says.

The C, F and N plan designs offer emergency coverage when insureds are traveling outside the United States, Independence Blue says.

Independence Blue and affiliates provide or administer health insurance for a total of 3.3 million people.
