Norm Kono, Veteran Underwriter, Dies

Norm Kono, a well-known life and long term care underwriter, has died. He was 72.

Before retiring in 2004, Kono was vice president-claims and underwriting in the long term care insurance operation of AEGON N.V. in Bedford, Texas.

Kono began his career in 1962 as an underwriter for CNA Insurance, Chicago. Following service in the U.S. Army, he resumed his underwriting career at CNA and later moved to Honolulu to be vice president for American Pacific Life Insurance Company.

Later in his career, Kono held posts, in California and Texas, with companies such as Commercial Bankers Life, Wespac Life Insurance Company, Societe Commerciale de Reassurance, and Life Insurance Rx.

During retirement years, he remained active in the LTC industry and served as an LTC underwriting expert with Underwriting Assist Inc., in the Menifee, Calif., office.
