Munich Re is bringing out a Web-based life insurance underwriting manual that relies on a new approach to measuring mortality risk.

The new EDGE manual was developed by a group of physicians, underwriters, analysts and biometric research experts, according to Munich Re, Atlanta, a U.S. subsidiary of M?nchener R?ckversicherungs-Gesellschaft A.G., Munich, Germany.

EDGE offers 10 calculators, including a liver function test calculator that incorporates the applicant's body mass index.

Individuals can also add permanent personal notes to the manual, while companies can add annotations that appear to all their underwriters.

Munich Re introduced EDGE at last week's Association of Home Office Underwriters conference in San Antonio, Texas, and will roll it out to its customers in late May. The company will be offering one version for the United States and one for Canada.
