The New York State Insurance Department is looking for insurance examiners and examiner trainees.

Most of the jobs would be based in Albany, N.Y. – the state's capital – or in New York City.

Starting salaries would range from about $41,000 to $50,000 for trainees and from about $51,000 to $68,000 for examiners.

Candidates must have bachelor's degrees or master's degrees in accounting or related fields.

Trainees must have 1 year of related work experience, and examiners must have 2 years of experience.

Candidates will not have to take written qualifying exams, but state officials will assign scores to candidates based on the credentials supplied in their applications.

Examiners will "perform bank reconciliations, test unearned premium reserves, examine stocks and bonds, and review other facets of insurance operations to determine their financial condition and treatment of policy holders," officials say in a description of the examiner and examiner trainee positions.

"Extensive travel may be required, including overnight travel," officials warn. "Appointees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York state or otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job in carrying out their responsibilities in any location to which travel is required, including some locations not accessible by public transportation."
