Blue Shield of California will be using a blue ribbon icon to identify doctors who score highly on a set of performance measures.

California Blue, San Francisco, has developed the new performance program with help from the Pacific Business Group on Health, San Francisco, and other California employer groups and health care organizations that are part of the California Cooperative Healthcare Reporting Initiative.

The CCHRI has set up a program that collects performance data from 63,000 California physicians with about 5 million patients.

California Blue wants to look at data for 13,000 high-volume physicians and identify the physicians who are in its network and have especially high performance scores.

The scores do not reflect cost data, the company notes.

California Blue network physicians have seen their preliminary scores, and they have had a chance to correct any problems with the data, California Blue says.

California Blue hopes to start highlighting the network physicians with high performance scores June 1.
