A Pennsylvania carrier has designed a preferred provider organization plan aimed at college and university students.

Independence Blue Cross, Philadelphia, says schools of higher education can have the new Independence Blue Cross Student PPO plans ready to insure the students who will be arriving in August.

Students may also be to get coverage through their parents' plans, but, for many students, the student PPO plan will be cheaper, Independence Blue says.

The plan offers maternity care benefits, preventive care coverage, pharmacy benefits, and a 24-hour nurse helpline.

In addition to the Independence Blue provider network, students will have access to the national BlueCard network and the international BlueCard Worldwide network.
