Flu: Containment Strategy

Attempting to fully eliminate the threat of flu in such situations is unrealistic. Greatly minimizing the threat is not. The key is a good containment strategy.

Throughout flu season (which runs from October to mid-May in the United States), domestic staff should receive regular briefings as to the level of its severity in their area. For this purpose, The Centers for Disease Control provides a weekly Situation Update and FluView Map.

To keep flu to a minimum during an outbreak, employees and family members alike should observe these CDC guidelines:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. And if you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick, too.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

Wash your hands frequently and be sure to lather with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds, about the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are more quickly spread when a person touches something that is contaminated and then touches their eyes, nose or mouth.
