President Obama may include proposals aimed at struggling baby boomers Wednesday in his State of the Union address.

Obama will call for more use of automatic payroll deductions to encourage retirement savings and expanded use of retirement savings tax credits, according to published reports.

Obama also may propose caps on student loan payments and new programs to help families care for older relatives, in an effort to focus on the needs of a "sandwich generation" that is wrestling with college costs while worrying about how to care for aging parents, senior administration officials reportedly told the New York Times.

A representative from the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting, Washington, says she sees nothing new in the proposals described in the address previews.

"It will be hard to push this legislation through this year with the deficit," Spear says.
