Boston-based money management firm MFS Investment Management (MFS) recently introduced Advanced(k), a program for retirement platform wholesalers and retirement advisors dedicated to the defined contribution (DC) space. "The 401(k) space is becoming more narrow and focused, and advisors in this space have become a specialty group," says Matt Gannon, senior VP and head of MFS's defined contribution investments (DCI) practice. "As such, they need focused resources, so we have come out with practice management tools to help them better serve their client base."

The Advanced(k) program will be delivered by the MFS Investment Specialist Group, a dedicated team which supports platform wholesalers and retirement advisors across the country who are dedicated to the DC business. It features timely retirement plan market data, trend analysis, and other resources that enable advisors to objectively compare fees and services utilizing an in-depth fee database and worksheets. It also helps advisors develop and implement relationship plans with sponsors using specific templates and manage and enhance client relationships with program elements focused on conducting plan assessments, maximizing retention, and goal planning.

"The DC business is very complex and regulatory and legislative changes happen very quickly, so it's important for advisors to be specialized, " Gannon says.

MFS provides a suite of tools for advisors across the board, each one focusing on a particular niche to create a narrow value-added proposition, Gannon says. The company is in discussions with Ann Schleck & Co., a strategic marketing, sales, and client service consultant to the retirement industry with which it partnered for the Advanced(k) program, on ways in which to further enhance the offering. "Advisors need to be competitive in a very competitive space, so our focus is on helping them be that through using tools like the ones we offer," Gannon says.
