A recent survey by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that by 2020, the number of people needing treatment for substance abuse will double among the baby boomer crowd. Based on data from 2006 to 2008, the study estimates 4.3 million people 50 or older have used an illicit drug in the past year.

Some key findings from the survey:

  • Boomers between 50 and 54 are most likely to use any illicit drug (9.3 percent).
  • Marijuana is vastly more popular than non-medical prescription drug use or other illicit drugs (44.9 percent vs. 33.4 percent and 6.1 percent, respectively).
  • Men use marijuana more than non-medical prescription drugs (4.2 percent vs. 2.3 percent), but women use both (1.7 percent vs. 1.9 percent).
