Roger Crandall became chief executive officer of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company Jan. 1.

MassMutual, Springfield, Mass., is implementing a leadership transition plan announced in June, and Stuart Reese, who has been the company's CEO and chairman, will continue to be the chairman.

Crandall, who has been MassMutual's president, will keep the title of president.

Crandall has a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Vermont and a master's degree in business from the University of Pennsylvania. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst professional designation. He began to work for MassMutual in 1988, in the company's investment management department.

"As a mutual company operating for the benefit of our policyholders, our entire organization – including our leadership team, employees and financial professionals – is committed to continuing the long tradition of financial strength, security and stewardship we have provided to our policyholders since we were founded in 1851," Crandall says in a statement.
