65.7 million people, or 29 percent of the adult population of the United States, are caregivers, says MetLife Foundation in their survey, "Caregiving in the U.S. 2009." The study, which was funded by MetLife Foundation and conducted for the National Alliance for CareGiving in the collaboration with the AARP, revealed some interesting statistics surrounding the many people who care for adults, the elderly, and children with special needs. These are some of their findings:
* 66% of caregivers are female and are an average of 48 years old.
* 86% care for a relative.
* 7 out of 10 caregivers care for someone over the age of 50.
