StanCorp Financial Group Inc. has won recognition for increasing the greenness of an existing building.

StanCorp, Portland, Ore., the parent of Standard Insurance Company, has received a LEED Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, Washington. The council awarded the certification to the 217,000-square-foot Standard Plaza home office building, which was erected in 1963.

StanCorp invested about $208,000 in changes such as plumbing retrofits, the creation of parking for 75 bikes, and implemenation of green cleaning and recycling programs. StanCorp expects the changes to save about $111,000 per year.

In other insurance industry building news, JHA, a disability insurance consulting and reinsurance firm, is moving its offices to 9 Donald B. Dean Drive, South Portland, Maine, from the firm's current location on Exchange Street in Portland, Maine.
