Changing Shades of Blue

As of December 31, 2008, the top five holdings in Massachusetts Investors Trust, which this year celebrates the 85th anniversary of its founding, were the perennial blue chips Exxon Mobil, Procter & Gamble, Abbott Labs, Roche Holdings, and Johnson & Johnson. Taking look at the top holdings when this first mutual fund began back in 1924, the blue chips had a decidely different hue. While you'd recognize General Motors, General Electric, Union Pacific Railroad, and maybe even United Fruit (these days known as Chiquita Brands), some of the others may not ring a bell, or may raise a tinge of nostalgia if you are of a certain age.

Among the holdings 85 years ago were Nash Motors Co., the New York Central Railroad (railroads were very big back then), Naumkeag Steam Cotton Co., and the Punta Alegre Sugar Co.
