James Boyle has taken over from John DesPrez III as president of John Hancock Financial Services.

Manulife Financial Corp., Toronto, parent of John Hancock, Boston, recently named DesPrez to be chief operating officer of Manulife. DesPrez also is chairman and chief executive officer of John Hancock, and he continues to hold those titles.

Boyle, 49, previously was president of John Hancock's U.S. insurance division. Before that, he was president of the U.S. wealth management division.

Boyle now directs all phases of John Hancock's operations, John Hancock says.

"The company's core business areas include life insurance, long term care insurance, variable annuities, 401(k) plans, fixed products and mutual funds, John Hancock Financial Network and investment management services," John Hancock says.

Boyle has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Boston College. He holds the Certified Public Accountant professional designation.
