The annual cost of a private nursing home room has increased 4.7% this year, to $74,208, according to Genworth Financial Inc.

Genworth, Richmond, Va., says the cost of a semiprivate room increased 4.5%, to $66,850, and the cost of a private one-bedroom assisted-living home increased 1.4%, to $33,903.

The cost of a Medicare-certified home health aide jumped 36%, to $46 per day, but in-home care by a licensed but non-Medicare-certified home health aide rose only about 0.5%, to $18.50 per hour.

The states that offer the most affordable long term care are Oklahoma, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska and North Dakota, Genworth says.
