A health insurer is letting more members use a health and health benefits search engine.

Aetna Inc., Hartford, says 7 million enrollees now can reach the Aetna SmartSource system.

Aetna began testing the search engine on 980,000 enrollees at 19 large national employers in March 2008.

The search engine should be available to all Aetna enrollees who can use the Aetna Navigator member Web site by 2010, the company says.

The search engine uses specific enrollee information – such as an enrollee's age, ZIP code and personal health record information – to tailor search results.

Because of pilot program feedback, the company has added the ability for enrollees to search for information about medications, tests, procedures and immunizations and the ability to search Aetna's clinical policy bulletins, Aetna says.
