Older adults saving more, spending less

  • 71% — Percentage of adults who have cut back on spending in the past 12 months; 28 percent have started saving more.
  • 86% — Percentage of adults who have changed their spending and saving habits so they'll have more money in an emergency; 61 percent of adults over 50 identified this as a major reason for changing their habits.
  • 53% — Percentage of older adults who say having more money for retirement is a major reason for changing their spending habits.
  • 44% — Percentage of adults over 50 who are saving for retirement, compared with 57 percent of their younger counterparts.
