Assurant Employee Benefits includes features designed to appeal to educators in a new employee-paid disability insurance product.

Assurant Employee Benefits, Kansas City, Mo., a unit of Assurant Inc., New York, says the new Educator Benefits Solutions product offers a choice of 4 elimination periods, which can be integrated with common with school sick-leave and sick-pay arrangements.

The program also comes with relatively high minimum benefit amounts, to help maintain the value of the product against offsets, and a sabbatical provision that allows plan participants to continue coverage for up to 1 year while on leave of absence for travel or study.

The policy also includes definitions that clearly confirm teachers' eligibility for benefits during the summer, Assurant says.

To accommodate school work schedules, the policy can provide benefits for insureds who work as few as 20 hours per week.
