Vaughan To Lead NAIC

Therese Vaughan is set to become the chief executive officer of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners Feb. 18.

The NAIC, Kansas City, Mo., announced the selection of Vaughan today following a 7-month search for a replacement for Catherine Weatherford, who left the NAIC in July 2008. Weatherford is now president of NAVA Inc., Reston, Va.

Among the individuals previously said to be in the running for the NAIC CEO post were Diane Koken and George Nichols. Both are former state insurance commissioners and former NAIC presidents.

Vaughan was the Iowa insurance commissioner from 1994 to 2004. She was president of the NAIC in 2002.

While Vaughan was the NAIC president, she helped create the Interstate Compact which led to the development of the Interstate Insurance Product Regulation Commission.

Vaughan has been the Robb B. Kelley Distinguished Professor of Insurance and Actuarial Science at Drake University since January 2005. Vaughan also is a member of the board of the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association, Washington.
