Another ancillary benefits player is entering the competition to improve preventive care benefits.

Sun Life and Health Insurance Company (U.S.), Wellesley Hills, Mass., a unit of Sun Life Financial Inc., Toronto, says its group insurance division has started to offer oral cancer screening benefits along with most new preferred provider organization and indemnity dental plans.

Sun Life dental plans with the benefits will cover procedures such as toluidine blue stain screening, fluorescence staining, exfoliative cytology and brush biopsies, the company says.

In September, the AlwaysCare Benefits unit of Starmount Life Insurance Company, Baton Rouge, La., said it would pay for one oral cancer diagnostic test per year for members ages 40 and older who have suspicious lesions or risk factors for oral cancer.
