Only about 4% of consumers understand health plan terms the way health plans understand the terms.

Researchers at Regence, Portland, Ore., a group of Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in the Northwest, have published that figure in a summary of results from a survey of 961 U.S. adults who have health coverage.

About 60% of U.S. adults answered health plan terminology comprehension questions just half the time, the researchers found.

But about 90% of the participants said they feel adequately protected by their health plans, the researchers report.
