NAVA Inc., which bills itself as the Association for Insured Retirement Solutions, says it has hired Catherine Weatherford to be president and chief executive officer starting Sept. 3.

Weatherford previously spent 12 years working as executive vice president and CEO of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Kansas City, Mo.

Weatherford served a 4-year term as Oklahoma insurance commissioner starting in 1991.

She also has worked as a regional public affairs manager for Liberty Mutual Group, Boston. She has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Weatherford will succeed Mark Mackey, who announced his resignation from NAVA, Reston, Va., in January. Mackey will stay with NAVA during a short transition period, NAVA says.

NAVA conducted a national search for Mackey's successor.

"Cathy emerged as the clear choice for a number of reasons," NAVA Chairman Clifford Jack says in a statement. "During her 12-year tenure as CEO of the NAIC, Cathy helped unite the group's members into one voice and bring the association to the forefront of insurance regulation issues. I am confident in her ability to achieve the same level of success at NAVA while maintaining the organization's progress on key technology, regulatory and trade group partnership initiatives."

The NAIC, which has been clashing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission over the best approach to regulating indexed annuities, has named Andrew Beal to succeed Weatherford as the NAIC's interim CEO.

Weatherford left the NAIC around the time the NAIC announced that it plans to move senior staff members to Washington.
