The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has developed an audiocast for Web users interested in variable annuity enforcement actions.

Susan Merrill, chief of enforcement at FINRA, Washington, spends 9 minutes and 11 seconds giving her views on the topic.

"The sale of variable annuities has caused some investors harm due to suitability issues," Merrill says. "FINRA is watching very closely how variable annuities are sold to the public."

In part, Merrill notes, FINRA is interested in the topic for the same reason that insurers are: Because it appears that the market for annuities will be growing rapidly as the baby boomers become more interested in preparing for retirement.
