Letter to the Editor: Care Can't Be Left To Chance

In the June 2008 issue of LTC e-Wire, Attorney Eric D. Gerst states in his letter to the editor that consumer confidence with protection assurance is needed (It could be a good product but…).

Consumers are still confused about who is going to pay for long term care protection. Politicians and healthcare advocates keep talking about a system that will provide the care-in spite of the overwhelming evidence that the Medicaid system that could provide this care is imploding.

As the budget deficits widen and Fed policy moves toward eliminating double-dipping by the states in their manipulation of the Medicaid moneys, more and more boomers and their children will realize the folly of leaving their care or that of their parents to chance.

The legal profession (and, let's be honest, the Medicare annuity marketers) will be advocating loopholes in the state-federal care system forever, unless and until the rules become the rules and the expense of protection from long term care costs (both emotional and financial) is put in perspective.
