The question was: Does the number of life and annuity-licensed independent agents surpass the number of insurance agents affiliated with insurance companies?

a) Yes, by a wide margin
b) Yes, by a narrow margin
c) The numbers are the same
d) Not at all

The answer is: b) yes, but by a narrow margin. According to 2004 statistics from LIMRA International's Census of U.S. Sales Personnel, the number of agents affiliated with companies declined to 160,917 in 2004 compared with 195,141 in 1998, while the number of independent agents increased to 155,050 in 2004, up from 118,685 in 1998.
