WellCare Health Plans Inc. is eliminating about 208 of its 3,800 positions, the company says.

WellCare, Tampa, Fla., a company that helps run Medicaid plans and other government program health plans that provide coverage for 2.4 million people, says the cuts will affected about 5% of its workforce.

WellCare is making the cuts to "respond to changing business conditions and to strengthen its position as a leader in government-sponsored health care programs," the company says.

Most of the reductions affected the company's Florida and New York Medicaid sales operations, but some affected corporate and regional support personnel, WellCare says.

Although WellCare has eliminated some positions, it is continuing to recruit for 200 open positions, the company says.
