About 22% of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender adults who participated in a recent Web-based survey have no health coverage.

The uninsured rate for the GLBT participants compared with an uninsured rate of 12% for the heterosexual adults who participated in the study, according to researchers at Harris Interactive Inc., Rochester, N.Y., and Witeck-Combs Communications Inc., Washington, a marketing firm that focus on the GLBT market.

Harris polled 2,710 U.S. adults ages 18 and over, including 343 participants who identified themselves as being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

About 85% of the GLBT participants said they want to get health coverage from companies that provide domestic partner health coverage, and 84% said they want to get health coverage that provides domestic partner health benefits for the partners of its own employees, the researchers at Harris and Witeck-Combs report.
