Worries about costs may be leading U.S. residents to skip more medical care this year than cost worries did back in 2005.
Researchers at the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, Menlo Park, Calif., have published data supporting that conclusion in a summary of results from a recent telephone survey of 2,003 U.S. residents ages 18 and older.
The percentage of survey participants saying cost concerns have led them or family members to skip recommended medical tests or treatments in the past year has increased to 24% this year, from 17% in 2005.
About 66% of the 2008 survey participants who said they skipped care because of concerns about costs reported that skipping recommended care led to a medical condition getting worse.
