A Midwestern health insurer is making another deal in the Southeast.

Medical Mutual of Ohio has acquired Premier Health Systems Inc., Columbia, S.C., from Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals, Columbia, and Palmetto Health, Columbia, S.C.

Premier Health runs a statewide preferred provider organization plan that provides or administers health coverage for 55,000 South Carolina residents.

The price of the deal was not immediately available.

In May 2007, Medical Mutual acquired a South Carolina health maintenance organization company, Carolina Care Plan Inc., Columbia. Carolina Care covers about 70,000 people.

The Premier Health PPO plan should complement the Carolina Care HMO plan, according to Medical Mutual Chief Executive Kent Clapp.

Medical Mutual also has operations in Georgia.
