A managed care giant says it will refuse to pay hospitals for some types of care associated with serious medical errors.
WellPoint Inc., Indianapolis, says it has warned hospitals that it will not pay for surgery performed on the wrong body part, surgery performed on the wrong patient, or the wrong surgery performed on a patient.
WellPoint also will refuse to pay for the care following 8 types of errors or indicators of low-quality care, including care required as a result of objects left in the body during surgery, air embolism or blockage, blood incompatibility, pressure ulcers, catheter-associated urinary tract infections; vascular catheter-associated infections; infections inside the chest after coronary artery bypass graft surgery; and hospital-acquired injuries, such as burns or broken bones.
